Direct Vision Standard

With the new Direct Vision Standard regulations it will soon be law for HGVs operating in London to have a safety permit, to be granted a permit a Safe System will need to be installed. This will be enforced from March 2021 for vehicles with a zero star rating and over the next few years for higher rated vehicles.

The Safe System consists of the below requirements;

​

  • Class V mirror shall be fitted to the nearside of the vehicle

  • Class VI mirror shall be fitted to the front of the vehicle

  • Side under-run protection shall be fitted to both sides of the vehicle

  • External pictorial stickers to warn vulnerable road users of the hazards

  • A sensor system that alerts he driver to the presence of a vulnerable road user

  • Audible vehicle manoeuvring warning shall be fitted to warn vulnerable road users when a vehicle is turning left

  • A fully operational camera monitoring system shall be fitted to the nearside of the vehicle
